When I visited the Empire State building, the craziest thing to me were the windows on the top floor. The window frames were wooden and you could tell very old. You've probably seen similar window frames in older buildings that were 1 or 2 floors high, except here we were on the 80th or 90th floor. It took me back in time, imagining how it must have been for people working in this building in the 1930s, cracking a window open at a slant for fresh air.
Did they have central air in there then ?
There was an open balcony for viewing, if I recall correctly.
What to do about this sudden urge to buy a Otis Gen 2 elevator that improves passenger comfort by using polyurethane belts.
The restaurant at the base is vacant

Chrysler building is the most beautiful in NY. All NYers pretty much agree but we also love the ESB almost as much
I’ve worked there many many times they treat their employees horribly they go through doorman all the time like if they were garbage most of the building is falling apart the bottom floors that you don’t see are in complete disarray and middle floors are filthy
I prefer the Chrysler Building. (It has a bit more style…)
Glad they gave this grand lady a facelift. I went up to the observation deck in 2008, noticed it was much like the rest of NYC. Extremely ambitious in its day but never maintained like it should have been. Place had that NYC layer of grime on it, noticed deferred maintenance in that the building still had its original double hung, aluminum sash single pane windows. Which of course were leaking.
It is a great building, the architecture of all the early 20th century buildings is wonderful, especially compared to the glass cube skyscrapers we have now, so boring but at least not as ugly as brutalist architecture

Otis gen2's are very generic lifts. Out of all the lifts in the us and UK id say 65-75% are gen2's. They could've atleast done something different
I bought a ticket to the observatory in 1977, then used the stairs to get to the top. I gave up and used the elevator after 50 floors. I was 15 years old.
I could listen to Fred talking about paint drying!!!
They should do an obesity fighting challenge and whoever can walk up the stairs to the observation deck gets free admission.

It's also a very happy warm and friendly building to visit.
This incredible beautiful building has always intrigued me. It was always talked about or mentioned in the media when I was a child growing up. It's up there with the statue of liberty and mona Lisa Eiffel Tower. We all seem to know them before we have really seen them for the first time. 😀🎅🌲🎄🤣🌟🌼🌞❤

All those buildings overseas can be the tallest in the world, but the Empire State Building will always be a classic and last the test of time for beauty and its architecture.

I worked there in the 90's. Always freaky when the old school window washers strapped in and climbed out the windows. The bathrooms needed an upgrade back then, hope that's included too.

Here from the UK. I’ve always loved The Empire State Building, certainly the most iconic in the world I think. I had the pleasure of going to the top 10 years ago. A lifetime ambition.

As a kid I grew up in awe of the Empire State Building and am sure it influenced my decision to become a structural engineer. Every time we went to the city I begged my parents t go there. As a young adult I was fortunate to serve my apprenticeship (EIT) with Skidmore Owens and Merrill assigned to Fazlur Kahn during the design and construction of Sears Tower. Yes, Sears is taller but it just does not have the mass or presence of the Empire State Building. Something about all that Art Deco and the grandiose designs of the period – It rocks.
